Driverless trucks may play a big role in the future of robot construction crews. Take Komatsu’s new autonomous dump truck. It works totally independently and has no room to accommodate a human driver. Without a driver’s cab, the truck’s bed allows for better load distribution, hauling capacity, and less tire wear. The 49-foot-long truck has a top speed of 40 MPH. The driverless hauler also boasts 2,700 horsepower and can haul a payload of over 250 tons. It also takes safety very seriously: the truck scans the immediate area 100 times per second to plan the safest and most efficient route.
