The Bren (from Brno, the Czechoslovak city of design, and Enfield, the location of the British Royal Small Arms Factory), usually called the Bren Gun, was a series of light machine guns adopted by Britain in the 1930s and used in various roles until 1991. While it is best known for its role as the British and Commonwealth forces' primary infantry light machine gun (LMG) in World War II, it was also used in the Korean War and saw service throughout the later half of the 20th century including the Falklands War and the 1991 Gulf War. - Wikipedia

It is the best because I think they thought this gun through, the MG42 is a waste of ammunition the BAR good but the barrel, the Bren gun steady rate of fire and no need to burn your hands off of a burning barrel.

In the stress of battle, the method of firing in short bursts can often go out the window. It is all to easy to forget these things when thousands of enemy soldiers are bearing down on you. All you want to do is fire as many shots as possible into the enemy. That is where the problems arise. Btw. All nation's MG gunners were taught to fire in short bursts

The Ammo expenditure is one problem - tehre is no point trying to argue about it. However, on a range of over 300 meters, in battle when you are stressed and the masses of soviet infantry is swarming against you then you would be thankfull to have that much firepower. Aiming in stress is not easy so the possibility of hitting multiple targets is higher. Btw. the doctrine among german MG gunners was to fire short bursts.

In my opinion, the MG-42 is very wasteful in terms of ammunition expenditure. Even when you strafe with it, you're still going to put 20-30 rounds into a single target, which is completely unnecessary. I'm not trying to be funny or anything, but hitting a single target with 20-30 rounds isn't going to make him any more dead.

May be a year or more on but worth pointing out the obvious 2 mistakes - MG42 is not an LMG it's GPMG so at this point the descussion is pointless to some degree but also worth mentioning regardless the Bren does have a removable barrel... infact a very easily changed barrel, difern't machanism but at least as quick as the MG 42... If you know anything of the subject matter is probably best to keep your opinions to yourself...
-
Your compareing 2 differn't classes of gun... MG 42 is a GPMG and the Bren is a LMG so the two are automatically not really comparable, It's almost like saying "The Battleship HMS Warspite is a better fighting ship then the destroyer HMS Aurora" you see what i mean? MG 42 was a bit of an ammo whore anyway... Think in a open fight (i.e. ignoring the 42's indirect fire capability's) I'd prefer the Bren, trench warfare the 42 would win my vote.

Mg 42 was the best machine gun

@RetardoBastard1 Check out Thomas Peck Hunter on Google.

@RetardoBastard1 MG42 isn't a LMG by the standards of WW2, try firing that from the hip
-
@SecuR0M MG42 - 1200 rounds per minute / Bren - pfff. MG42 - removable barrel / Bren - pfff. Have you looked what german military Bundeswehr has on their "panzers" today? MG3 similiar to MG42 and german gun makers are the best in the world. So dont tell me that some kind of bren is better.
-
@RetardoBastard1 Not at all. Bren is based on the ZB-26 light machine gun. It is superior in all aspects.

BEST LIGHT MACHINEGUN??? :-D :-D :-D :-D LOL BREN??? MG42 is 43854846846846543787454132464654 BETTER :-D :-D

@Thelonesniper101 it's 9 months on but what the hey :) Browning and MG42 are better in defense but as a light machine gun that can go forward with an assault I think the BREN wins out for Versatility/mobility. BAR, Seriously? I mean it's ok if you don't mind it Jamming, It's inferior accuracy and magazine, not being able to change the barrel when it overheats (which it will unless you wanna shoot 3-5 rounds only) and the need to clean it everyday in certain climates then yeah it's great I guess.

@SILVERsoilder1 stfu the type 99 is a real japanese lmg
-
I remeber those old english comic book: on the cover there was always an infantryman holding the Bren and firing directly at me..
-
Have used it in service very accurate Limitations Mag Fed no match for belt fed gun. Carry / Barrel change handle when locked to left causes it to tip right badly. Have to muscle it to keep upright. Piston & Gas Chamber on bottom no guard for better carry gets damn hot. Barrel release on left slightest knock to spring operated catch causes it to disengage if not careful you can spend a lot of time picking the barrel off the ground. Was past its prime before WW2 started as ZB26
-
@0013111 even the americans disagree to a part. the bren was much more acurate was much easier to reload when running or in prone and less likely to jam.....along with being able to have a longer sustained fire. lol but im british so i guess im a bit biasd
-
Uncomtortable to carry in your pack according to some old british soldiers, Always some part of it jabbing you, They also say that the recoil makes the gun oddly judder forwards. But I do think the design of puting the sights off to the side, Because of the top loading magazine was a good idea, Round an obvious problem.

@0013111 ????? Could you explain why?
