Worst Engineering Disasters | Engineering Fails - Televesion Shortcuts in engineering design can lead to engineering disasters. Engineering is the science and technology used to meet the needs and demands of society. These demands include buildings, aircraft, vessels, and computer software. In order to meet society’s demands, the creation of newer technology and infrastructure must be met efficiently and cost-effectively. To accomplish this, managers and engineers have to have a mutual approach to the specified demand at hand. This can lead to shortcuts in engineering design to reduce costs of construction and fabrication. Occasionally, these shortcuts can lead to unexpected design failures. So lemme get this straight... A new hotel and casino is being built in Vegas (MGM), and they allow a fire sprinkler exception because the deli and casino will be open 24 hours??!! Have I got that right so far? I just can't believe people were that stupid to not think about the possibility that maybe either of those places might not end up staying open all the time. At SOME point in the future, they might not be making enough profits to remain open at certain hours!! And that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there could be many reasons they might close down for long periods of time. If that's the only reason they thought they could do without sprinklers, then that's pretty short-sighted. Fucking stupid people, running things!!

Regarding the MGM Fire in Las Vegas. On 2 or 3 different episodes of CSI, there was mention that people in the casino died because they wouldn't leave the slot machines they were at. Are the CSI episodes wrong or did the above video fail to mention this fact?

GM's engineers wanted to use a double-jointed rear axle on the Corvair, which would have prevented the camber change problem. The accountants over-rode them, so it had a single joint. (Like the VW bug.) The later Corvairs had the double-jointed axle, and handled well. (But it was too late.)
