The Kashtan (Russian: Каштан, English: Chestnut) close-in weapon system (CIWS) is a modern naval air defence gun-missile system deployed by the Russian Navy. It is found on the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, Kirov class battlecruisers, Neustrashimy class, People's Liberation Army Navy Sovremenny class destroyers and Indian Talwar class frigates and other modern designs. Most typically deployed as a combined gun and missile system, it provides defence against anti-ship missiles, anti-radar missiles and guided bombs. The system can also be employed against fixed or rotary wing aircraft or even surface vessels such as fast attack boats or targets on shore. The Phalanx CIWS is a close-in weapon system for defending against anti-ship missiles. It was designed and manufactured by the General Dynamics Corporation, Pomona Division[4] (now a part of Raytheon). Consisting of a radar-guided 20 mm (0.79 in) Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base, the Phalanx is used by multiple Navies around the world, namely the Royal Navy and the United States Navy on every class of surface combat ship, by the United States Coast Guard aboard its Hamilton-class and Legend-class cutters and the navies of 16 allied nations. A land based variant known as C-RAM has recently been deployed in a short range missile defense role, to counter incoming rockets and artillery fire.[6] Because of their distinctive barrel-shaped radome and their automated nature of operation, Phalanx CIWS units are sometimes nicknamed "R2-D2" after the famous droid from Star Wars,[7][8] and in the Royal Navy as Daleks, after the aliens from Doctor Who.[citation needed] The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. It is larger than the next 13 largest navies combined in terms of battle fleet tonnage.[5][6] The U.S. Navy also has the world's largest carrier fleet, with 10 in service, one under construction (two planned), and two in reserve. The service has 317,054 personnel on active duty and 109,671 in the Navy Reserve. It operates 286 ships in active service and more than 3,700 aircraft.[3] The Russian Navy (Russian: Военно-морской Флот Российской Федерации (ВМФ России), tr. Voyenno-morskoy Flot Rossiyskoy Federatsii (VMF Rossii), lit. Military-Maritime Fleet of the Russian Federation) is the naval arm of the Russian military. The present Russian Navy was formed in January 1992, succeeding the Navy of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which had itself succeeded the Soviet Navy following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. The first Russian Navy was established by Peter the Great (Peter I) in October 1696. Ascribed to Peter I is the oft quoted statement: "A ruler that has but an army has one hand, but he who has a navy has both." The symbols of the Russian Navy, the St. Andrew's flag and ensign (seen to the right), and most of its traditions were established personally by Peter I. Russia Listeni/ˈrʌʃə/ or /ˈrʊʃə/ (Russian: Россия, tr. Rossiya; IPA: [rɐˈsʲijə] ( listen)), also officially known as the Russian Federation[10] (Russian: Российская Федерация, tr. Rossiyskaya Federatsiya; IPA: [rɐˈsʲijskəjə fʲɪdʲɪˈrat͡sɨjə] ( listen)), is a country in northern Eurasia.[11] It is a federal semi-presidential republic, comprising 83 federal subjects. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk, and the US state of Alaska across the Bering Strait. At 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area. Russia is also the world's ninth most populous nation with 143 million people as of 2012.[12] Extending across the whole of northern Asia and much of Europe, Russia spans nine time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. The United States of America (USA or U.S.A.), commonly referred to as the United States (US or U.S.) and America, is a federal republic[10][11] consisting of 50 states and a federal district. The 48 contiguous states and the federal district of Washington, D.C. are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is the northwestern part of North America, west of Canada and east of Russia which is across the Bering Strait in Asia, and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-North Pacific. The country also has five populated and nine unpopulated territories in the Pacific and the Caribbean. .

ALL THESE BLAZING GUNS CAN NOT PENETRATE THE WATERS EFFECTIVELY ,THEY WILL BE HARMLESS IN 20 METERS THROUGH WATER,THEY ARE WAITING FOR ATTACK FROM THE AIR AND THERE COMES THE ATTACK FROM UNDER THE WATER ,WITH A TORPEDO DOING MORE THAN 300 MPH,FROM A RANGE OF 30 MILES ,THEY WILL SAY NO TORPEDO CAN DO 300 MPH FOR 30 MILES RANGE,( NOT ENOUGH ENERGY IN IT TO GO THAT FAST FOR THAT LONG DISTANCE) ,WELL SCRATCH YOUR HEADS ,I KNOW HOW,FUNNY THE RUSSIANS HAS A FAST 350 MPH TORPEDO WITH A RANGE OF MERELY ONLY 9 MILES,SAD STORY,THE RUSSIAN TORPEDO WILL BE OUT OF ENERGY SO SOON,BUT 30 MILES AWAY DOING MORE THAN 300 MPH ,HOW TO CONTROL IT ,IT IS SO SIMPLE AS WELL,THESE ENGINEERS ARE ALWAYS STUCK SOME WHERE,AND NEVER ABLE TO GET OUT,AND THE RUSSIANS ARE STUCK AS WELL ,THATS WHY THEY EXPECT AN AIR ATTACK WHILE THE DENSE WATER IS SO FORMIDABLE TO GO THROUGH IT VERY FAST ,THAT THEY STOPPED THINKING IT IS POSSIBLE TO BE ATTACKED FROM DOWN BELOW FROM A VERY FAST TORPEDO,ALWAYS THEY LOSE FROM THE PLACE THEY NEVER EXPECTED THE ATTACK TO HAPPEN,THIS IS HOW BATTLES ARE WON.

Looks like a control panel from the 80s. US weapon systems would smoke this.

I'm not knocking the Red Fleet but there are rumors that Russia has little money left to maintain the fleet and most sailors have deserted those ships. I'm sure those weapon systems must be very expensive to maintain and it's probably quite expensive to train crews if there's little ammunition to waste. I don't know anything about the Russian military and all these rumors might be false, but I just wondered. A country low on funds could still keep a strong military but those weapons systems are costly. A few practice rounds fired could be very precious. It's just something to think about. I'm not looking to start any flame war and I don't have any ill feelings against the Russians. I wish the U.S and Russia could join forces for space exploration and wish there were no need for these weapon systems.

Best shit ever. Now let's hope they won't cut the power due to unpaid bill.

One of the best defense the US could use; stop the Russians and Chinese
