SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded four contracts worth S$1.04 billion for three stations and the adjacent tunnels on the Thomson MRT Line, and for the line's Mandai Depot. In a statement on Friday, LTA says the works will start in the first quarter of 2014. Works on Woodlands interchange station and Mandai depot are scheduled to be completed in 2019 while Lentor and Mayflower stations are scheduled to be completed in 2020. The contract for Woodlands station and the adjacent tunnels, worth S$292 million, went to GS Engineering & Construction Corp, a South Korean engineering firm that's also building the Downtown Line's Hillview, Cashew, River Valley and Tampines East stations. Woodlands Station will be located near the Woodlands Regional Bus Interchange and Causeway Point. The contract for Lentor station and its associated tunnels, worth S$247 million, was awarded to China Railway No 5 Engineering Group. Founded in 1950, it is a wholly-owned subsidiary company of China Railway Group Limited, and has been involved in building national trunk railways, highways, urban rail and public works across China, and metro lines in Beijing and Changsha. Lentor Station, located along Lentor Drive, will serve residents there and the nearby Ang Mo Kio Thye Hua Kwan Hospital. The S$174 million contract for Mayflower station went to Gammon Construction Limited, which has been involved in other LTA projects such as the Boon Lay Extension Trackwork, Woodsville Interchange upgrading and the construction of Downtown Line's Chinatown station. Mayflower Station is located along Ang Mo Kio Ave 4 and is close to CHIJ St Nicholas Girls School and Kebun Baru Community Club. Fully underground, the 30-kilometre Thomson Line is expected to enhance rail connectivity in the north-south corridors to the Central Business District and developments in the Marina Bay area. The line comprises 22 stations, including six interchange stations: Woodlands, Caldecott, Stevens, Orchard, Outram Park and Marina Bay. Meanwhile, the S$329 million contract for Mandai Depot went to Jurong Primewide Pte Ltd, an arm of JURONG International that's involved in Singapore and international projects, including the depot for Tuas West Extension. www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/works-on-three-thomson/851948.html
