Machines | Winter Project - Fixing Up the 1984 John Deere 316

EDIT: I repaired the fuel pickup and re-routed the fuel line, which eliminated the fuel delivery issue. The tractor starts and runs great now. Just wanted to wish everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! This video is a little bit late but I finally found time to throw it together. Halfway through the video I switch over to my new Samsung Galaxy S7 phone with a different camera, not sure how I like it yet. I'll have to make a few videos with it and see how good it is. It has a stabilizer feature that makes it look slow and trippy. In this video, I go back to work on the 1984 John Deere 316 project. Trying to get it all fixed up before I sell it. Over Thanksgiving break, I sent the carburetor out to get rebuilt, and I adjusted the valves and ordered a few gaskets and misc parts. Fast forward 3 weeks, I retrieve the rebuilt carburetor and gaskets and install everything. In the process I broke one of the intake manifold mounting bolts due to improper torque readings on my torque wrench. Also found out that the threads for the exhaust manifold on the left cylinder were stripped and poorly re-tapped, so my uncle heli-coiled new threads and we got the exhaust manifold mounted up properly. I repaired the spark plug wires which weren't making good contact with the coil and causing the engine to run on one cylinder intermittently. I also replaced the oil pressure sending unit which was causing the low oil light on the dash to keep flickering. Finally, I decided to replace the fuel lines since the old ones were starting to rot and leak fuel. After replacing the lines, tidying up the wires and fuel lines to keep them away from the drive shaft, and checking to ensure the fuel pump worked properly, I got the tractor all back together and ready to sell. Unfortunately, even with new fuel lines and filter it still has difficulty running on a hillside for some reason. There might be dirt or gunk in the fuel tank. Will have to check it out. Since we now have an X570, I don't need the 316 anymore. I'll wait till I'm out of college to purchase myself a nice 300 series. The 316 will be up for sale very soon. It was a money pit and a stressful project, as I would just keep finding more and more problems with it, but in the end it was fun to work on and I'm glad I was able to save it from further abuse or even being scrapped. Once I sell this tractor, I plan to buy a few accessories for the X570.

Sure you spent a lot of money on it, but I'm sure you learned a thing or two in the process. And hey, at least you arent inside playing call of duty lol.

I've got the Samsung s7 and I have to say it takes one of the best pictures and videos for just a smartphone. Great video!

where you located?

Good video .The camera is very clear. As far as your fuel delivery , do you think it might be the carburetor float not set correctly? I like this model but I'm too far away to consider buying it. (Northern Ontario)

I had my 316 running yesterday. Just playing with it. Hope to have the 318 and 212 going soon. All the cosmetic stuff is done on both and waiting on a few parts for engine rebuilds on them. Good to hear from you and enjoy your winter break.

My 74 John Deere 210 came with the Hydraulic Lift ( deck and rear tiller ) so I put a front Plow on last year. Love the Sleeve Hitch also.

wait holdup....is there a high idle screw on the P218G?

Great video!!!! I bet your going to miss the onan motors. I tried to make one last final video of the year but knowing my luck the choke cable broke off my 707 when I moved it up so now I have to take the hood off, take the filter off, and take the battery out to attach the cable back to the lever. I'll probably have to hand adjust the choke too. I just got a go pro for Christmas so that could be a good first vid for it when spring comes around.
