Machines | What to Expect Your First Year as a New Truck Driver
videos | at work | information | view | construction
A new truck driver endures the most challenging part of his entire career, in their first year. Just a few things the new trucker ought to be aware of, so you know what to expect in your first year. The pay is often lower than a more experienced driver, the loads dispatched to new drivers aren't usually premium loads, new drivers are often kept out on the road for very long periods of time, and sometimes trucking companies take advantage of new drivers. This first year may be somewhat stressful, but is necessary to get in hours behind the wheel, and get experience to add to your resume. Trucking companies like to hire drivers with experience, so you may not have much choice when it comes to your very first job in the trucking industry. After the first year, things should start to get better..... the driver will usually travel with his own company truck, and not as a team member/driver trainer, so become more independent. The loads will be better and things will fall into place. If you love to drive, hang in there... it'll be worth it in the long run. i am 22 and just got out of school, im currently on my 2nd week in training. my trainer and i are pretty cool. same interests, goals, etc. but the pay is shit. through training i get 70$ a day plus 20$ a day for meals (90$). but we go 14 hr days for 5 days a week. made more money making pizzas.. but only 3 more weeks till im on my own. another shitty problem we hit my 1st week were the number of trailers other drivers werent doing post trip on/ not reporting defects or mechanics just simply not fixing them. we had 3 stops between buffalo to laredo TX and refused 4 trailers due to flats, lights, bumpres. training blows. made 6$ an hr for 70+ hours.

Ive had my cdl for about 10 years but im having trouble finding work as a cdl driver because ive never used it for over the road and its been quite awhile since ive driven a class a sized truck. When i was younger i had a bad driving record, but nothing with drugs or alcohol, but its been about 21 years since that happened. In the past 16 or more years ive kept a pretty clean driving record, just a speeding ticket here and there every 3 or 4 years or so. I love to drive so thats why i want to get into truck driving. I love being by myself and that's another reason. Any ideas on which companies i should apply for.

Truck drivers should just kill themselves. Total waste of life. If you
aspire to be a truck driver, you should have already killed yourself and
if you're one now....you either are thinking of killing yourself, or
you will soon enough. Lowest form of human job right next to shit

Just getting started in the industry soon, graduating the academy here in Finland. All in all, from what I've heard - all the things apply here as well.
I appreciate any help I can get to get started safely (concerning myself and the others on the road). I've been watching these viedos of yours and gotta Thank You. Humbly. I appreciate these. -

I am thinking about it as a means to an end to get out of my current situation. I am an experienced driver not long haul overnights but I know what I am getting into if I do it. My only concern is that at the end of the 2 or 3 years it takes to get myself back on my feet I will be miserably fat and out of shape, this is my real fear. Anyone have any advice or anything at all would be helpful.
