Machines | What's The Best Suspension - Soft or Stiff Springs?
videos | at work | information | view | construction
Is it better for a suspension to have soft coil springs or stiff springs? The purpose of a suspension is to keep your tires on the ground. A softer suspension will offer more mechanical grip as it will do a better job of keeping the tires on the ground vs a stiff suspension when it comes to depressions, bumps, and surface irregularities in the road. But then why do race cars have such stiff suspensions? This video explains the design philosophy behind race car suspensions. Related Links (And Hat Tip!) Great video EE..... Thanks

Thanks for sharing

this is "suspension for dummies 101". Pure basic knowledge. There is much, much more to say about suspension.

What about compression and rebound of the shock absorber acting on the spring. Seems like you just wanted to show off your sweet math knowledge and not actually reach any legitimate conclusion.

Engineers have to compromise for the intended purpose and budget-you can add technology to affect how much you get either way but maintenance can get onerous. Stiff leaf springs and a live axle works well on my pick up that can go off road with a load. The soft fully independent setup in my sedan is much more pleasant on the road, with good handling (low center of gravity helps too).

i tend to drive just throu hole in the road, or countryside...what spring suits me ? any advice ?

O_O bruh...

I think stiff is always better............

This video is very subjective. Each has advantages, but for street driving, stiff and low allows for better handling and more grip through turns. The best case for soft springs is in rally racing, where the springs are very soft, but very long. That allows for the car to have a low stance (low center of gravity), but keeps the tires pushing to the ground despite all the dips and bumps on the uneven surface. That's just my two cents. Great explanation though.

How to select suitable spring stiffness for an ATV

Even thought thats written in english, it looks like chinese to me since i dont understand none of that.

What do you recommend for trucks

this man is a smartypants. I want his soul.

wouldn't the dampeners bound and rebound settings have allot to do with how fast or slow the spring negotiates a bump or hole in the road?
thanks and good video -
Even as a daily, i really wish my car had stiffer suspension. I love the way it drives and the springs arent worn, but i just hate how much my car moves when getting on the highway. It doesnt move much and most people wouldnt notice a difference from anyother car but its a micro difference that annoys me.

I would love to see some sponsored content from Ohlins suspension on this channel. They are supposedly some of the most beautifully and meticulously designed suspension in terms of the quality of engineering and RnD that goes in to them. Plus they make them for your S2000 so you could get a set and try it out for free probably. I am interested to know how much of a difference their Dual Flow Valve technology makes on the street

Love your videos. I am trying to understand how Spring rate, Damping, Rebound affect ride quality.
Many of us just want to drop the car for a few inches without sacrificing the the ride quality. -
Will you help me set up my Evo 9? I do a lot of autocross and with your knowledge, you might be able to help me set the right dampers in front and rear. I'll give you the numbers needed for calculation.

I'm not smart enough to be watching this video..
