Victorian Farm is a historical documentary TV series in six parts, first shown on BBC Two in January 2009, it recreates everyday life on a small farm in Shropshire in the mid-19th century, using authentic replica equipment and clothing, original recipes and reconstructed building techniques. Episode 2 As winter draws on, animal fodder and shelter is provided. Mangelwurzels are stored in a clamp and then chipped with period machinery to feed the cows. A pigsty is built upon a foundation of bottles to provide insulation and three young Tamworth pigs and a pregnant Gloucestershire Old Spot sow are housed there upon completion.[18] A ram is added to the sheep flock and marked with raddle to ensure that he impregnates all the ewes so that they will lamb in the spring. A shire horse, named Clumper, is also added to the livestock and training in his use as a draught animal is performed. Domestically, the weekly laundry is done in a Victorian style. Stain removal is first performed, for example, using milk to remove an ink stain. Then the clothes are hand-paddled, mangled and ironed over a period of several days. Christmas is celebrated with a church service; the Victorian novelty of a Christmas tree; a plum pudding and a roast turkey; and presents are exchanged such as some hand-made braces.

Does Christmas pudding taste like fruit cake?

They really need bigger buckets with those machines ...

@ 6:23 "Laundresses had the reputation of being drunkards...." LOL! Maybe they were using the spirits for more than just laundry.

I'd love to see the Victorian answer to "how to perfectly press and fold the fitted sheet." 4 days of laundry. If we don't too ch anything for 2 weeks I have one full day of laundry. 4 days per week......... No thank you. But I can appreciate hand washing. Use to hand wash when I was saving money by not going to the laundry mat. Saved 40 a month but hand washing.
-
Thank GOD for inventions! I can't imagine doing laundry for 4 days! Yet at the same time I see why the world is gaining weight because we don't move constantly like they did of yesterday.

I've watched all the episodes of these BBC farm series. They are very interesting to watch. I live in the heart of farm country in the USA...the state of Iowa.
-
As a Canadian I would love to see a Canadian version of this. We can get feet of snow. I can't imagine how people managed. I don't know nearly enough about my country's domestic history.

39:15 This is the very first time i feel terrible for such a delicious dish, i mean at least here in Guayaquil we eat it as a stew, choped and with lots of potatoes and rice. It is so freaking delicious and soft that it meakes you asking always for more. We call it in spanish LENGUA GUISADA or ESTOFADO DE LENGUA, which is basically cow's tongue stew.

The estate owner is a real pain in the patoot. "Use authentic nails please". Pooft.

I remember the whole ox tongue cooked by my grandmother, it always had a wonderful flavour and was a great addition to the xmas table.
-
Thanks for the memories, haven't had tongue since I was a child. Great sandwiches. Slice thinly and use mustard.

Ruth should write a book about all the techniques people used to use for stains, etc. I can see it now: "Old-Time Solutions for Modern Day Problems."

Just bought Reckitts blue cubes and used them when I laundered some white sheets that had gone yellow and also slightly grey through long storage, it worked beautifully, wonderfully white sheets again. I love the Victorians!
