I never saw a steam train in regular service for VR except once, but chance I saw one working as a shunter behind rows of parked trains approaching Flinders Street from Richmond in the mid-late '70s and I had no idea that as late as '66 they were still running. Great surprise and the film around Crewick was epic. I was born '63 and my parents would drive us around the state on trips. I was fascinated by the country branch lines and almost every time we stopped it seemed that the line was either recently closed or about to close for good. Even the suburban network in Melbourne faced many proposed closures at the time.
