Award-winning apprentice Michael Airey, 21, from Gateshead, has a string of qualifications to his name, along with some of the most prestigious cars at his fingertips. Winner of the Apprentice of the Year category at the regional final of the National Apprenticeship Awards 2010, Michael is employed by Tanfield Body Repair in Gateshead. Although, by his own admission, he didn't fair too well in his GCSEs, Michael knew that to pursue his ideal career he would need to develop his skills further. With a keen interest in cars, Michael decided a vocational route was the best option available and enrolled on an Apprenticeship in Vehicle Body Repair and Paint Operations with Gateshead College's Apprenticeship Department. As a result he attended the College's Skills Academy for Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics. As well as attending college, Michael was able to gain some valuable hands-on experience through his job with Tanfield Body Repair as an apprentice paint sprayer.
