Mid of US C-17 in the air, heading to Mali STORYLINE A US military aircraft took off on Thursday from a French military air base in Istres, southern France, bound for Mali. On board were three French army vehicles and about 50 French troops. "We have flown a total of so far seven missions down range moving down to Mali... seven missions, 200 passengers, French Army passengers and 168 tons of cargo. This mission will continue for two weeks," said US Lieutenant Colonel Shawn Underwood, who is in charge of the mission. Even though the US are helping the French "whenever they need", Lieutenant Colonel Underwood underlined that "the United States is engaged in logistical and intelligence support of the French military" and is "not doing any combat operations." Last week US officials said they had offered to send drones to Mali and were considering a broad range of options for assistance, including information-sharing and possibly allowing limited use of refuelling tankers.
