As the auto industry continually looks to improve fuel efficiency for vehicles, so does the U.S. Army. I was pleased to talk to Carl Johnson, a team leader at the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC), located in Warren, Mich., who introduced me to two of the latest fuel efficient demonstrator trucks -- the Bravo and the Alpha -- when I attended SAE International's 2012 Powertrain Electric Motors Symposium for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in Detroit. Fuel and water are the two most important items delivered to soldiers in the field. And it makes sense that you can't scrimp on the amount of water needed on the battleground. But according to Carl, by using these new vehicles, you can deliver less fuel, yet get more use from it. And by creating more efficient vehicles, fewer soldiers must be put in harm's way.
