Here's what I can't figure out: How can the owners of FB or Gue gull claim to have any jurisdiction or legal right to censor other websites? Sure, they own the largest internet businesses in the world, and they can do virtually anything they want to the people who use them, but that doesn't mean they own the internet! Domain names and IP addresses are assigned by the Internet Authority, and no one owns the internet. Even the people assigning the domain names have no ability to selectively turn off certain sites or IPs. In fact, that is why it takes so long to establish a new domain after you purchase a domain name: The lists must slowly propagate and diffuse out into the hierarchy of nameservers on the net. To my knowledge, the ONLY technology which has the ability to selectively shut down websites is what the government termed the emergency "Internet Kill Switch". They sold it to the public with the idea that it would work like a kill switch on a motorcycle or jet ski -- as if the entire internet would be shut down all at once if an emergency virus were released by the enemy. But they implemented it by forcing the communications companies to build hidden commands into the individual routers they sold which allow people who know the secret to be able to shut down each router individually. So for the multibillionaire owners of Gg and FB to threaten to censor arbitrary websites on the internet, it seems they must plan to use, or must have already co-opted, the government's kill switch technology.
How can that be fair or legal??? -
