Machines | The Ultimate Explorer Vehicle: Test Driving Bran Ferren's KiraVan
videos | at work | information | view | construction
The KiraVan is meant to be the ultimate exploration vehicle—a ’Swiss army knife on wheels.’ A pet project for designer Bran Ferren, who named the van after his daughter Kira, the KiraVan also acts as a test bed for travel tech and vehicle engineering. In the latest episode of Voyager, made possible by KAYAK.co.uk, Motherboard visits Ferren in LA county to see his souped-up caravan, which comes complete with everything from cameras and thermal imagers to an accompanying motorbike hoisted on the back. Formerly president of R&D at Walt Disney Imagineering, Ferren’s certainly not short of ideas to add to his design. After a tour, we take the KiraVan for a test drive. Could this be our ride to far-flung destinations in the future? o mi god that is a bratty girl
-
This is basically the old guy for Jurassic park where he has an insane idea with basically unlimited funds but will most likely never see it work
-
Jeez, did you see the girl's facial expression completely change when he said they were gonna start driving her dad's KiraVan? She's a moody one. The host is great, though.

This guy built this hugely multi-purpose thing, that is configurable to all these different things, but he doesn't realize that people just buy what fits their niche and satisfies their needs. Not some overpriced machine that can do a million things, and JUST so happens to do the thing you need as well. edit: just tried visiting the kiravan website, doesn't work, lol, how sad.

"high quality components" motorcycle won't start, truck won't shift into first, diesel leaking everywhere.
-
daddy's going crazy and she knows it
-
Sir, ... few steps away from creating jurassic Park.

Peter Gabriel

So this is another example of people that have too much money and how they like to waste it. Not practical in anyway.
-
With this you can go everywhere😎👍🏾👍🏾
-
he kind of reminds me of the old man from Jurrasic Park... not only because oft his outet apearence but also because of his 'I don't give a shit about anything because I just want this!' mentality...

Stupid douchemobile
-
Waste of money, shit can't go no more than 5 miles without breaking. This thing will never see the off roads it was built for
-
And not even 100 miles into the Australian outback, all systems fail.
-
This reminds me of The Lost World: Jurassic Park
-
All he's done is filled a van with a load of science apparatus... Wait.. it's not even a van!

I'm still unsure why they chose to reinvent the wheel when it would make more sense to me to update a surplus chassis? like an m35 or m1070, etc, things with a proven track record of driving to hell and back, and won't break down while putting along a side street on paved roads. this looks more like it uses so much custom fabrication in its parts, youll be waiting for a month as your replacement parts are flown in by bush plane. all the fancy gadgets could easily be (and have been) mounted on similar vehicles, this just seems like a guy with money to burn. I guess that accounts for the motorcycle with a 500 mile range though. which already that wouldn't start either.
