I adore everything English, but the butthurt by British/European people on here is embarrassing. European railways are an absolute joke when it comes to hauling freight-especially in the UK. When it comes to freight railroading, America is absolutely on top of the world. Most Europeans can't wrap their brains around the sheer numbers involved in American railroading. There's a reason why the EMD 645/710 series is the industry standard around the world for over fifty years. They're the best. When the rest of the world wants a freight locomotive including most of Europe, they call EMD or GE in America.

So where is the history part? No mention of the British invention of the railroads and starting them in America long after the UK had them. -
That's so stupid how they have train dispatchers and computer-driven trains and yet they still use engineers. Takes pretty much all control away from the poor engineers anyway, making them redundant. Why even have them? That's so sad. I love technology, but not when it takes jobs from people. In this case, it doesn't take the job. It just turns the engineer into a stooge who presses a button and does whatever someone 300 miles away tells them. Sheesh! What's the fun in that. I used to think it'd be fun to be an engineer, but not with all these people breathing down your neck from hundreds of miles away and computers that shut down the train if you don't do Exactly what it wants. O.o Just my opinion, but even though I'm a computer scientist, it makes me not like certain aspects of technology. :(

Mr. Jim "Bob-Lee" Boyd is an idiot - having a privately owned railroad does NOT differentiate the United States from the rest of the world. ALL European and Australian railroads started as private enterprises. They were sometimes nationalized much later to make railroads a more conform system which made them faster and safer. While in America still 70% of railways don't even have radio communication and runaway trains are a daily occurence. This, Mr.Boyd, is what happens when the Bible is more important than a history book. Yeehaw.
