Machines | The Day I Broke My Excavator and All Hell broke loose
videos | at work | information | view | construction
Its not a perfect world. In fact sometimes more sh@t hits the fan than you like. Thats what happened on this job. Sooooo we talk excavators, landscaping, problems with construction management, heavy equipment breakdowns yada, yada, yada. More problems and nightmares than one job should ever have-but it happens more often than people realize.

WHAT , I TAKE IT YOU NEVER HEARD OF DOING PM WORK ON YOUR EQUI[MENT ?
-
I work underground. Lots of machines break. harsh environment. PM preventative maintenance goes along way and properly trained operators help to. not saying these guys are not trained.

Who ended up paying for the line that the owner swore wasn't a problem? I'd have the owner put it in writing that's what he wanted. Otherwise, it'd get patched and buried!
-
Thanks for putting this out there. As a small business owner myself, I always try to be transparent about the good and the bad.

Hey Dirt monkey, thanks for the video. Dont take this the wrong way but Im glad im not the only one lol. My business is smaller than yours Im just an owner operator with a dump truck and track loader but I know what its like when everything seems to go wrong all at once. Your positive attitude is inspiring. Best wishes from me and my family and happy New Year!

Stanley, this is the most positive message for the New Year.
I love construction and heavy equipment and have experience in that line of work.
Thank you. -
one time we had opel astra with bad turbo and the owner brings a new (fake ebay) turbo we mounted it and after 10min car goes i hi rpm dangerous runaway only thing stopping it from going even faster was hidrolifters losing oil we stop the engine pull off intake pipe from turbo and compressor wheel is completely gone we pull the turbo off and try to start engine again and it ran weak but as time was going hidrolifters started to get oil back and valves started to let more air so we bought original garret turbo the owner of the car did not wanted to pay for it so we ended up in 300ish dollar loss and i was never scared so much of diesel engine also that was first time that i had diesel runaway (respect diesel or he can get angry)

A company I worked for was pouring a 75' bridge deck and the turn motor went out on our crane. Luckily, we had only dumped 4 buckets when that happened. I hate to think what would have happened if we were half-way through. Still, most of the rest of the day was spent scrapping and washing that concrete out of dense re-bar. Kind of like mowing the lawn with cuticle scissors.
We also once drove a piling through a 4" high pressure gas main. Talk about finger-pointing! Not us, though. The piling HAD to go right there. -
Look skippy I excavate all the time and WTF guessing a broken sewer line FLUSH THE DAM TOILET STUPID and see if water comes down the pipe NO GUESSING!!!!

It is good to see someone try to address the psychology of this business for what it really is. I agree with you 100% that a problem must be understood completely, that the wise never assume anything, and going above and beyond just "CYA" is a mature and high integrity way of doing things that saves big money, preserves productive relationships, and makes for a good reputation in the long run. Thank you for the video.

I in the past was a heavy equipment mechanic for a construction company. Some days you just can't win! People cry and complain when they receive the bid on jobs, they just don't understand how much it takes to maintain heavy equipment! Just a single tire for an end loader can be thousands of dollars. A complete undercarriage rebuild on a dozer cost as much as a new truck. Repair welding and hard surfacing cost a small fortune. Contractors go through hell and high water and handle a ton of money only to keep just a little bit of it! Today is a hard world it cost a lot of money to hire and keep decent help let alone good help. It cost even more to find good and trustworthy companies to do mechanical and welding work on the equipment.

So did you get compensated for the replacement of the line. I would think you should have since the homeowner told you to remove it.
-
Great words about conflict and problems!! You deserve to have success!
