Machines | Technician vs Mechanic -ETCG1

The idea for Technician vs Mechanic comes from the suggestion box at EricTheCarGuy.com. jjrobs399 asked what the difference between a mechanic and technician was. It's a fair question to be sure, and one that I feel may inspire some debate. The point I try and make in this video is that yes, there are differences between the 2, however, I feel they both have a place and one is not necessarily better than the other. At least that's the way I feel about it. I also touch on the fact that technology has crept into just about every automotive system in modern vehicles, therefore on some level I think you could consider all auto mechanics 'technicians' these days. It's just a thought. One that I hope brings us higher pay, and more importantly, respect in the coming years. Thanks for watching. the word tech , or technician is becoming overused to the point of having no meaning any more .... everybody is a tech now from the guy with 20 years experience and a wall full of certificates to the guy who just watched a 20 minute youtube video and now feels empowered ......... what happened to the terms , apprentice , journeyman and master ?
-
ETCG you are an ASE master tech. You are basically a car doctor.

I got a question for eric the car guy - how can I(anyone) get in on these great salvage yard deals for a parts vehicle .I want to buy a salvaged s-10 zr2 with with all its parts intact so I can strip it for the parts I need and sell the other parts i don't need to pay for the salvaged truck....i found a salvaged truck for sale, but the only ones allowed to bid are salvage yard operators or dealers according to what I could find out..soooo do you have any idea how backyard mechanics/ truck hobby guys can buy a salvaged vehicle to part out...I just watched a chris fix video where he stripped a jaguar and it was in excellent shape for 1500 dollars...so I was hoping I could find a 2000-2003 s-10 zr2 somewhere in like condition...blahblahblah means ill shut up now and let you try and answer ....later. : )

What about Automotive Engineering?
-
I think the correct term is Hack vs. Technician. If you dont know your way around a diagnostic scanner and a simple scope meter like the Vantage Pro, your teetering on that line of being a hack. The days of drawing a sharp line separating mechanical from electrical and electronic are long long gone. Sadly, I still see lots of folks, of all ages, trying to just that. And that makes hacks.IMHO

You must have heard me snicker when you called that a "high end" tool lol

hi am from Ethiopia, I graduate from higher education institute with Mechanical engineering am good in theoretical things but am not skill full. May ur videos help me to be skillful pls contact me!

Hi everyone. in my experience of working on cars we must have a lot of talents in this trade. we must be computer/internet,math, metric/standard,read schematics, understand engineering principles, some welding capabilities, and a whole lot of thinking power and creativeness. with all this in mind I believe we can consider ourselves as very talented individuals. Techy or mechanic in not sure. one thing is for certain we are talented !!!! 💪😎
-
Well said, very well said. Most mechanics will not be mechanics in the future, even to replace a engine and a transmission needs programming. Even a trans repair or engine will need a scanner to perform a relearn. Not knocking nobody, just saying we all need to stay ahead.

I am an ASE certified technician. my personal take on this topic is the fact that you have to many people out there in this business that claim they are technicians when in fact they are way under qualified, hence it is hard find a good "mechanic these days"...... That is one of the reasons this industry has a bad stigma.
-
Hey
Sorry to bring up an old video pal but I'm becoming a technician apprentice tomorrow.
This video helped me quite a lot in being able to know the definitive difference between a technician and a mechanic,
Thank you! -
Hi im From Morocco - Can i buy the Good multi brand Tool Diagnostic in USA ??
-
whoo hoo yeah raises for all!!!

The term "mechanic" is old school, from before cars had computers on board. Today they are auto tech's. I hear in Houston, TX, where I live that a Master Tech can earn ($37-50) per hour. not bad.
-
He looks tired. Shots for the video Eric! 👍🏽

You cannot ever compare being a mechanic/technician to brain surgery. That is just ignorant.

where is the repair vid LOL haha had to just had to love you by the way your awesome I my self am Proud to call my self A heavy duty And diesel Mechanic and i Work an all makes models and years plus I also do smaller stuff too but not a technician
yet I have more computer and diagnostic equipment than any shop or dealership lol I actually get a load of referrals from dealers and shops as they call me the gremlin killer.... and i have years of training a red seal and 12 ase Certification plus iam certified for Detroit International Cat and Ford ...... now why do ia accept the name mechanic well because I get dirty a technician if its not in the book or in the computer they cant do it and if there's any chance of getting dirty they dont want to do it so to me that is a technician limited in ability and dependent on the book and the computer and says it cant be fixed or we have to replace it all or or well my computer says there is nothing wrong or its going to cots you millions to fix it ....... A mechanic does not need the book or the computer but knows hot use them if needed and owns them and will get dirty and never says it can not be fixed and Replacing the while thing is a lst resort and A mechanic tries to save the customer money
thats my opinion lol
hugs buddy keep up the awesome work -
I came of age in the 80s and that's the first time I started seeing the word technician for auto repair. You could go to some "tech school" (whether it was specialty or not) and get certified to become an auto technician. What this meant was you knew how to utilize the latest technologically advanced tools to electronically diagnose mechanical problems.
The way I see it is both words are interchangeable right now, but there is a difference. Tech minded people are more left brained (logical, cold and calculating) and mechanical minded people are more right brained (can be logical, but it's gotta FEEL right). -
Hello ETCG1,
Can you recommend a low to reasonably cost scan tool that allows access to vehicle functions (CAN), such as initializing ABS module for break flush?
I am DIY automotive engineer using my own tools.
Thanks in advance. -
it's definitely different how you see it in America to hear in the UK technicians over here I like people that have just left College and mechanics like me or also auto electricians in the UK technicians in this country just do what the computer tell them to do and probably only get it right 50% so I take it mechanics in the UK on more like your master technicians
