In the lead up to Exercise Talisman Sabre 2015 (EX TS15), a combined Australian and United States Special Forces Task Group deployed commandos and a parachute engineer team to conduct repairs of the airfield at the Mount Bundy Field Training Area in the Northern Territory on 01 July. The exercise was based on the parachute insertion of a Commando group in the preceding days which conducted a tactical ground move to secure the airfield. The airfield had been severely damaged by an enemy which then required a 'parachute load' insertion of heavy engineer equipment and troops from Australia's Special Operations Engineer Regiment (SOER). The SOER troops repaired the airfield and removed obstacles which allowed other forces to land using United States C-130 Hercules aircraft. EX TS15 is a training activity focussed on the planning and conduct of mid-intensity “high-end” warfighting activities in a combined and joint environment.
