I rode the Southerner express train from Christchurch to Dunedin in December 198 when there was a daily passenger train between Christchurch and Invercargill. Unfortunately today there are no passenger trains between Christchurch and Invercargill. This was taken from a silent super 8 movie, hence the poor clarity and complete lack of sound.

I rode this train many times in the 50's no cafe on the train then we all piled out to grab a cuppa and a bite to eat at Oamaru Station a 10 min stop on my way from Burnham Camp to Invercargill the seats were not the best it cost one shilling to hire a pillow for the journey

This is fantastic. It's a shame past governments didn't invest in our passenger rail infrastructure as New Zealand had a very good rail network. If they had, we could be up there with Europe when it comes to rail transport.
