Machines | South African Railways Live steam class 23 at Perth track 20-09-15

A few clips taken at Perth Model Engineers (SMET) new track layout. The main loco in the clips is a 5" gauge South African Railways class 23 4-8-2. This new track is fantastic for testing model live steam locomotives to their limits as the gradients are very steep indeed and sure make locos talk

Brings back some fond memories for me from back when I used to travel along. Once upon a time I was fortunate enough to ride up in the cab of a Beyeres Garratt from Sabi to Graskop.

A bit like some grades in South Africa?

Is that an operating mechanical stoker or just a dummy?

Huge engine for 5" gauge. Glad you enjoyed the challenge of the gradients of the Perth track extension. Hope you come back soon. Trevor
