Machines | Singer Heavy Duty Model 4423 Sewing Thicker Leather
videos | at work | information | view | construction
I previously tested this machine by sewing a medium 4mm weight leather. It handled it so easily I figured I would try out some heavier leather (3mm thick) I had in my stock pile. I was reading reviews on Amazon when I created this video. Several said this machine wasn't heavy duty at all; that is was all plastic, etc... While the cover is plastic the frame is all metal. That is what is important as it keeps everything in alignment. For the price of this machine (seen on Amazon for as little as $139) this is indeed a Heavy Duty Machine for the very affordable price point for the home market sewer. Yes, more expensive machines may be able to do the same or even better, but not at this low price point. I have machines that will sew through very dense and thick materials, but they cost 10 times what this little machine does. I also have machines that cost 3 times this that won't sew through thick materials with the ease that this machine does. Another option for sewing heavier materials (leather, jeans, canvas, etc...) is an old vintage machine you can often pick up at thrift stores. These are the machines that are solid metal and have external motors that can easily be replaced and upgraded to a 1.5 amp motor for around $70. The point of these videos is to help those of you considering this machine make an informed decision.

Which machine do you prefer: 4411, 4423, or 4432, 4443? for sewing leather and heavy denim? Thanks. I am looking for a reliable inexpensive heavy duty machine for leather.

How thick of a leather or layers of leather can it handle?
-
how much does it cost?
-
Wow. looks like a good machine. if it can handle leather, it should handle 600-100D cordura too?
-
is that accessory needed (behind attached to the foot)
to sew heavy fabrics it´s the first time i´ve seen it used on this machine -
Hi @kevinsews would you still recommend this machine or are there better machines available today in this price range?

Hello. I make hand bag in Jamaica which I sell. My boss brought me this machine via amazon. com, but all along I thought it was an industrial machine; now that I know it's a domestic machine. I am worried because I use it on the weekends to make my bag. Which one of the singer machine is the industrial?

Hi I'm looking to buy this machine i was just wondering is this more of a repair machine or something i can use daily for projects that take my fancy?
-
Where did you get the cool large thread spool holder? Thanks. :-)

What settings would you recommend using on thick leather? ie, tension, length, etc. I've been testing out my 4423 on 2 layers of 2mm cowhide veg tan leather (4mm total), using a leather needle, and I don't think the needle is driving down far enough to pierce completely through the bottom layer and complete the stitch. Is the "depth" adjustable? Any other thoughts and tips you have would be welcome. Thanks

Hey, any idea if this machine will work with thick pile faux fur?

I have a question, I am looking at getting this machine, but would like to know if you think it would be able to sew through 2 layers of 8 ounce buck skin leather? Please let me know what you think, I am very curious about this, because I have a project being brought to me with that material. Thank you in advance.

Hi Kevin. Thank you for the great videos. Can you tell me the part number or model of the walking foot you are using on this 4423?
-
@john montgomery The problem is finding a twin leather needle, which I've personally never seen.
-
John, if you can find a twin leather needle then it should be able to handle it. As long as the leather isn't too thick. I'd stay around 3mm thickness to be safe..

Do you know if this machine would sew leather with a twin needle?
