Bringing the Shell Eco-marathon to Africa required intervention to introduce the challenge to school learners and university students. The Car-In-A-Box approach provided the general framework and chassis for the local teams to participate in the challenge and further develop their cars with competitive edge by customising the build. The 2014 Shell Eco-marathon was won by Team Voltronics from University of Johannesburg. The 2015 Shell Eco-Marathon South Africa aims to be bigger, better with more international participation and a focused approach to incorporate new technologies to enhance energy efficiency in vehicle manufacture, design and drive.
