Hundreds of farmers from all across Serbia protested in front of the Serbian Assembly in Belgrade, Thursday, against a new draft legislation regarding sales of fertile agricultural land. According to critics, the legislation will see the most fertile agricultural land being sold at preferential prices to foreign and domestic tycoons, with Serbian farmers and Serbia in general receiving no financial gain from the sales. The leader of the Democratic Party of Serbia Bojan Pajtic said that they "will impede the application of this law if it is passed. When we will come to power we'll abolish all the contracts concluded under this law," adding that "this law is not acceptable, because it impoverishes the villages, impoverishes agricultural workers, disperses many places in Serbia, and it will disable people from a secure existence for their families with honest work".
