Machines | Restoring Headlights with 3M Kit -EricTheCarGuy

I've done other headlight restoration videos, one in fact, but when I tried this kit earlier this year I found it to be the easiest and most effective kit that I've used to date. I chose the kit for the drill but if you don't have a drill you can also get the 'human' operated kit. As you'll see in the video that kit comes with a few extra items. Just be sure to mask off the area before you begin work. If not, you might end up with some scratches on your finish. Otherwise I feel this is something any DIYer can do and get great results from. the hand job will take longer

That's an 04-05 civic

Eric do you think that putting a 3 clear spray coats on b4 the buffing would permanently fix fogged headlights? I ask this because I herd a lot of people say that the 3M kit is only temporary and a couple of months later headlights start getting foggy again. thnx for your time/

I used this kit on my car and when I worked in a shop we used this on customers vehicles. only thing we different was keeping the lens constantly wet. after 2-3 strokes we sprayed water over and over. we were told it helps with friction

The hand version goes up to 3000 grit. The drill version only goes to 800 grit. Get the hand version.
-
Masking off is definitely the way to go, but if you accidentally hit some paint, the 3000 grit disk can pretty easily buff out the swirl marks.

Great video. I used the 3M kit on a Ford Windstar several years ago. It works great and like you said, it doesn't take that long. Thanks for convincing me to use the 3M again to the lenses on my wife's car.
-
Same kit I bought,,only mine came with the finishing wax coat..that you apply using a fine cloth. They look brand new!

Polishing works taillights?
-
that isn't a 2007

You're sanding OFF the UV layer. Best to clean and polish lenses from the new state. For brave souls, apply UV Clear Coat spray.
-
Thanks Eric- I can do this - I believe the hand polish part would be for -hard to get at places - Screw all that stuff give me a drill - lol

Is it possible for a headlight to be so discolored that it is too far gone to be restored? Anyone can feel free to answer.
-
Thank you for your video. You're very good at explaining what to do. My husband is now going to clean my headlight. Thank you again.
-
Eric, I've been told that after you get your headlights restored to how you want them that you can give them a couple of light coats of clear coat to maintain the longevity of the restoration. Is there any truth to this?
-
Thank you for telling the masses that over sanding, or to high speed, will cause damage to the plastic headlight cover, even crack it, you are the only one to tell people this....good job, thank you again.
-
And please don't forget to add headlight fluid afterwards! (haha)

Thanks Eric. Great tutorial and super product. I have zero talent for this type of thing but you made it easy for me. Great tips!! Worked like a charm.
