Machines | Removing broken exhaust studs
videos | at work | information | view | construction
Broken exhaust studs seem to be a predictable problem on older vehicles. Here's the best way I've found to get them out. By the way, it works on most any kind of broken off bolt as long as you have enough sticking out where you can get a grip on it. Also, don't waste time with vise-grips. Get a good quality set of gripping pliers. You'll be glad you did.

loosen some, tighten a tad, loosen more, tighten a tad..... repeat

When I can I'd weld nut onto the stud. Then heat it till it's red hot then quickly pour or spray cold water onto the piece till it's cool. The stud almost falls right out. I guess the thermal shock breaks the rust loose! Works 100%

Just heat the cast iron around the stud until it glows a bright red and the stud will unscrew like it has never seize on the threads no wax or penetrating oil required. Wait till it glows bright before you put the Vise grips on the stud. Trust me, it does not matter how rusty the stud is. The trick is to get the iron/steel bright red.

will ear wax work
-
Worked perfectly! Thanks
-
would irwin bolt extractors work to gran onto the stud after you heat and wax it?
-
Thanks! I had been trying heat for ten minutes but had no luck until using the wax. Great trick!
-
idk is that wax doing anything

Beeswax works really well. I used a torch with Mapp-pro gas on my latest project, but I didn't heat the part until it turned red - seemed to work best at a medium temp.

Wow that is so convenient pull the manifold off. Show me on the vehicle like most people would do.

bad Ideas

to weld on a nut can I use propane torch?
-
Once it is loose, Put some penetrating oil or other thin lubricant on both sides and work it back and forth while cooling.
Trying to turn that HOT stud with pliers (HA! ) in that Red Hot cast iron can cause the threads to gall up and that stud will become a Permanent parts in that Manifold. Get a proper tool to grip the stud.
Your BFH is NOT a CURE ALL.....You Lucked Out This Time!

ha em that was a heating torch it takes welding rods ta weld BUT YOU WERE CLOSE i guess lolol oh good deal on craftsman, hell with finding that dam snap on truck driver, high ass gas prices i guess ha
-
yeah, like everyone has a press. maybe you do however most of us do not. and are you really that concerned that he chewed up his pliers, who gives a crap, now maybe you will not ruin yours, and just like the press, we all have a welder so lets just weld a nut on. STUPID
-
I am just throwing this out there- but if the exhaust was held in a VICE a good few hits and you could call it a day....
-
The kid really chewed the hell out of his $30 Knipex pliers. Just weld on a nut and use a wrench, boyz.
-
wouldnt a vice or press work?
-
Rather than your "Kimpex" Water pump pliers, clamp a good quality locking grips (Mole grips) on it, and wind it out! :)

Wax works at lower temps, getting it cherry red just vaporizes it.
