Machines | Randy Ridings' quayak: A four-wheel, land/water invention
videos | at work | information | view | construction
Randy Ridings, of Carthage, loves kayaking. But he hates the part that involves arranging transportation -- either stashing a bicycle at the end of his route or hiring a pickup service. The quayak is his solution: It's a vehicle he invented that can traverse over land and water. He can float down the river, then pedal back to his starting point.

Would be amazing if you could drop a hobie pedal system in.

Hm. It's the problem that most two-phase vehicles have, where they don't do either thing very well and weigh too much. It's a fun idea, but a light folding bicycle with a tow hitch, and a little back wheel on a kayak that becomes a bike trailer, would be more to the point, even though it would mean getting out and making the conversion. 5 minute's re-rigging would be nothing compared to the speed gain and the flexibility of not being stuck with a slow awkward kayak and an unwieldy semi-bike that was too wide for the shoulder and too slow for the road. Sorry to be negative - I celebrate people making fun odd things just for the fun of it. It's an interesting, but impractical idea.

That looks a lot of fun!

That's pretty cool. Is it impossible to have the wheels retract upward somewhat like jet wheels while you're in the water? Not into the fuselage :-) but up above the water, then lower the wheels before leaving the water. Maybe that would mess up the center of gravity?

We were fortunate to meet Randy last night when he peddled through town on his 400 mile trek. An awesome guy with a great imagination to make this quadyak. We wish him well on his journey!
