Pascal's law states that the pressure applied at one point of the liquid is transmitted equally in all direction. This principal is applied in hydraulic lift, for lifting heavy objects.

the reduction in area (really volume) of a1 has to be equal to the increase in the area (again, really volume) of a2, that's simple equivalence.

i needed this info 4 the basic system -
So I am trying to teach myself about hydraulic systems and this video has me confused. What is the force applied to A1? Say 500 lbs is applied, does that mean the force is more, less, or the same on A2? Keeping in mind I know nothing about this; however, I would assume that larger pushing smaller is force multiplication and smaller pushing larger is force reduction? That may not even be right now that I am thinking about it. It would depend on the travel of A1 right? Holy crap...this video did not help me.
What about the conservation of energy? You can't get out more than you put in right? So then what do you lose here? I am guessing you lose in the travel distance right? Okay, maybe I have worked it out then. Smaller pushing bigger is force multiplication but sacrifices travel distance? So A1 must travel farther than A2 for the force to be multiplied right? And larger pushing smaller is...crap! it's what? -
So essentially it's putting pressure on objects through pressing water?

the force isnt transmitted throughout the liquid 2 the large cylinder.It is the pressure which is transmitted :P
