well the good news the engine is not rusted out gear inside electric starter gear inside doesn't correctly move out to start the engine so yeah to open the starter and clean any debris or rust out
-
I wouldn't of let it go I love getting those old beast running the only time I would of let go if it was froze up
-
I know sometimes you want it to just crank up but after sitting for years I would of drained fuel and replace then bleed it out then let it starting buy using gloe plugs instead of ether

First job on a parked machine is to drain the fuel tank and replace the multiple fuel filters. If it starts, change the engine oil right off too. Then send out the hydraulic fluid and the old engine oil for a test report. Those reports will tell you if you want to own it. Also, starting fluid goes into the air filter box with at least the secondary filter in. Asking for disaster breaking open the air feed lines - like sucking in a rock from your shoes.

I looked at that guys 953C, He used his stuff for Demolition. Most all his equipment was beat to hell...
-
Dang! I found myself watching intently, hoping it would pop off for you. I've dealt with enough old crap growing up, just praying it would start sometimes (like my truck all through college). Oh well, like you say, on to the next one. Let someone else deal with it.

john deere has hitachi make their excavators for them so their not really john deeres except for the motors
-
Possibly the fuel in that thing is very old. Try draining it out and putting some fresh gas in it. Just an idea I had lol
-
Chris, pretty sure this is a re-branded Hitachi. I spent a fair amount of time in the orange version back in the day. They were pretty smooth in their day.

what a shame it didn't start
