Machines | New CDL Truck Driver Tips Driver Pay + New Truck Driver Turnover

http://RedVikingTrucker.com This video answers a question Eric sent to Support@RedVikingTrucker.com asking why I think truck driving has such a high turnover rate in the 1st 90 days. I answer Erics question about new CDL truck driver turnover rates, and I also address pay and mindset. I do believe people have to 'fit' a psychological profile to be comfortable doing this business, and I have not seen one company yet do any personality screening to help companies choose the drivers better. This truck driving gig is a good paying job and even better at the owner operator level, but you HAVE to get thru the 1st 6-12 months to get your experience. The solitude of being an over the road truck driver can be daunting if you don't like your own company, so choose wisely. I love it so far, but I have a plan, and a step stone to better pay if I stay in this trucking business for longer than 6-12 months. If you like my new CDL truck driving tips, please like subscribe and commment. Thanks for watching

@Red Viking Trucker is there a way you can avoid the 34 hour reset?

Subscribed. In similar situation. Older fella, lot of success during dotcom boom, but things have changed a bit. Saved money, but am having to go back to the workforce to salvage savings. Knight seems to be the direction I'm headed as a starter. Kids grown, wifey is on board. Thanks for the advice. P.s. last but not least, many thank for your service to our country, too! Peace.

One thing to remember about idling without an APu even though companies allow it many give monthly fuel bonuses based on MPG and also have perks like free idle air and idling affects both .some companies have bunk heaters and there are also little portable heaters you can buy and plug into an inverter to stay warm and not have to idle especially the sleeping bag heaters.also remember a fan can be a great way to reduce the amount of idling needed .another tip is to lift your hood for about 15 min while doing your post trupbtonlet that extra engine heat escape. Also know your companies way they compute idle time .ex at SRT the info on idling is captured at midnight .so say you go to bed at 8 pm don't idle .they have a 5 min period that doesn't record while the engine is in the warming time .when you first stop put a dark sheet or window screen in place to block radiant heat and close curtainbetween bunk space and driving area with front and rear ac on full at coldest setting .turn your portable fan on also .this should allow you to fall asleep and be comfortable atleast till midnight then if you need idle the truck . Because when you get up and drive all day your idle numbers will go way down I can generally keep my percent of idle under 20%

Hey RVT, I'm hoping to get a grant here in AZ to go to trucking school. I spent several years in mainland China, and am looking forward to working solo OTR. My question for you: After I finish school, what companies should I stay away from? Seems every company out there has horror stories on the internet, kinda hard to sort it all out. I want to do a good job for a decent company, keep myself and the drivers around me safe, and become the best driver I can. Advice?

A thumbs up just for your name haha. I drove back in the 90's and have been thinking about getting back behind the wheel. One thing I'm surprised about is how little pay has gone up. i think I made about .34 a mile back in 1995. Yikes. And fuel was .90 cents a gallon then. I remember fueling up before hitting the west coast because fuel was 1.10 over there haha.

I'm looking at getting into Trucking would have last year if I didn't let other people's fears and concerns influence my decisions.
But hey. It is what it is.
I feel I have the grit and determination to make it combined with a positive mental attitude and a background in Customer Service.
I appreciate you given straight talk and giving the good and bad with the job.
It honestly seems to be what you make of it.
If you can soldier through that first year then you can really get things set up nicely if you are smart about it. -
Your military exp being paid by rank is kind of like trucking, 1st rank in trucking student driver, rank 2 training/trainer, rank 3 company driver, rank 4 lease op/owner leased on to a company, rank 5 owner op with your own authority with your own customers. As you go up in "rank" in trucking your pay goes up but so does your exp and your options in terms of hometime, where you run etc. I'm 12 years as a company driver, so same rank for 12 years, Iol. Crap.
