This fall, NAIT opened its new Heavy Equipment Technology building near its Main Campus. Located in a recently remodelled Government of Alberta hangar that was once part of the former City Centre Airport, the 2,770-square-metre (nearly 30,000-square-foot) space will help the boost program capacity by roughly 60 per cent. Combined with renovated teaching space in the original shops, as many as 1,600 students could be trained annually in the Industrial Heavy Equipment Technology diploma and the Heavy Equipment Technician apprenticeship programs. These programs are regularly and heavily over subscribed. Demand for graduates continues in construction, mining, forestry, agriculture, transportation and other industries that are looking at staffing shortfalls owing to retirements.
