Machines | Motor Oil Myths & FAQs - Synthetic vs Conventional
videos | at work | information | view | construction
Choosing the best, whether synthetic or conventional, engine oil is highly controversial and debated. Motor oil is surrounded with myths and questions. Shell helps answer the following: - What does 5W-30 mean? - Why should I change my oil? - What is the typical composition of motor oil? - Are aftermarket oil additives needed? - What does synthetic oil mean? - Can you mix synthetic with conventional oil? - Can synthetic be used to break in an engine? - What causes sludge? - Why should I use the viscosity grade that the manufacturer recommends? So what is the bests oil 👀 castrol? Mobil? Penzoil? Who really knows 👀
-
pennzoils garbage if you want to replace your engine at half the milage of other oils
-
yukki maybe but i sell tons of oil worst we sell is pennzoil

People that keep asking about the lighter weight oils, it's mostly to increase fuel mileage to meet epa specs. Your manual shows you what weights to use in what climates, I'll run 5w30 in the winter, ( my winters don't get much lower than 20 deg F and summers no more than 104f) and 10w30 in the summer, any brand or any group 3 or 4 that's on sale. I run 20w50 diesel, Rotella, or Mobile one in the motorcyle, they still have ZDDP and won't cause the wet clutch to slip. Group 3 and 4 are full synthetics, 4 is PAO based or made in the lab, 3 is mineral baed with a great addititives package, but still better than group any 2 or conventional. I believe blends are group 2+ and I see no point to messing with them as there are no regulatory guidelines to what constitutes a blend. A blend can be very close to conventional or close to full synthetic, there is no way of knowing.

Thanks. That was educational indeed.
-
my 25 year old k1g engine takes 15w50 mineral oil, would switching to sintgetic be a smart move on an old engine?
-
never put used oil in your fishtank. ask me how I know....
-
Synthetic cost more! It's just to get more money out of the consumer for an otherwise inexpensive oil change.
-
She looks like she is going to sneeze any moment
-
When you change your engine oil type you are already mixing engine oil. The previous oil are already lubricating engine parts and it will be mixed with your new oil that you add in that is in your oil pan.
-
Ooooh, she's giving us the sales stare over at 1:50 .
-
Maybe I'm crazy, but I think they could be related. Or maybe it's just him in a wig?
-
Nice Pennzoil pitch, NOT
-
So, "Fully synthetic" is NOT "fully synthetic"?
-
So the age old question: Is it bad to switch from conventional to synthetic and/or vice versa?
-
the best oil is clean oil.
-
Questions are incomplete, I have questions
If my manufacturer's recommends, I should use 5w-30 Synthetic, then can I use 5w-30 Conventional and vice versa?
They say as long as the viscosity grades are the same its ok, of course its obvious I shouldn't be using lower or higher grade over the other.
Also if my manufacturer's recommends to use 30 SJ JASO MA " MONOGRADE " oil can I use Synthethic 5w-30 SJ JASO MA or Conventional 5w-30 SJ JASO MA and vice versa? If so, will there be a change in performance? Will it improve or worsen my engine longevity?
Also which engine lasts longer and performs better (let's say same displacement and on purpose), those engines run on monograde oil or those that on multigrade (Synthetic or Conventional)?
Hope I get some answers to this. Thanks a lot man. -
The greatest myth about oils hasn't been answer.. Can you change from minarl or semi syn to syntetic.
-
An old popular science article reported on a Ford department head who did an experiment with synthetic oil, running his car to 100K miles on pure synthetic and never changing the oil! The engine was taken apart after the 100 K miles and it was in good shape....If that story is true which I believe it is then synthetic can last way longer than 10k or 15k miles as long as its at the appropriate capacity/level and the oil filter is changed.

Is it true that the larger the capacity of a retail container of engine oil, the better the quality. The story goes that the oil stratifies out in the holding tank. The better stuff rising to the top. So, they fill the small containers first for a certain percentage of the tank, then the next size up etc until they get to 205 litre drums at the top.
