Machines | Maxim second prototype machine gun
videos | at work | information | view | construction
Hiram Maxim produced a second prototype machine gun in 1885. This is described in UK Patent No. 1307 dated 29 January 1885. This is an animation based on the patent drawings and shows how Maxim had simplified the mechanism. The second feed wheel of the first prototype was replaced by a pawl mechanism that moved the ammunition belt in front of the feed wheel. Maxim also improved the 'crankshaft breech' - when ready to fire the crank pin is on its forward dead-centre which locks the breech-block firmly against the rear of the barrel. When the gun is fired, the whole assembly recoils backwards until an arm connected to the crankshaft strikes a plate fixed to the non-recoiling frame. The crankshaft then rotates, and the breech is opened. For further animations of Victorian-era machine guns, search YouTube for vbbsm. Further details on these guns can be found in my web site - search for 'anti torpedo boat guns'.

Very good
-
You should definately do one on the QF-1 Maxim quarter pounder field gun
Aka the Pom Pom
I think the 37mm brother should have its own demonstration as to not let it be forgotten from history -
very good and understandable nice animation
-
What software was this animation made with
-
please make a video more specific i liked this one but need a little more specifications
-
Thank you for posting the highly informative and very well done animation of the Maxim gun.
-
Nice work with the animation. Why don't you end the video with the maxim shooting at its full cyclic rate..
-
to many moving parts
-
why doesn't the belt get in the way?
-
The part connected to the lever that rotates appears to be at 90 degrees, how does the recoil enduce this rotation at such a high angle

Lots of moving parts.. field stripping it would be a monumental nightmare.
-
something just doesn't fit... i don't know what but something
-
and what makes it move back to reload ?
-
could you do a Bushmaster auto cannon?
-
talk about over engineered! and they made that in 1885? i cant even imagine how long that took to machine!
-
That's amazing. Did you make your animation by youself? What software did you use? I think it took hundreds of hours to complete this complicated machinery. 1+ !

Looks similar to what russians did with their ShKAS aircraft machine guns.
-
Looks too complex, how is a soldier supposed to field strip this thing?
