Machines | Machinery Moving with a Tow Truck
videos | at work | information | view | construction
Another way to move a large machine - be it a CNC mill, lathe, or other piece of heavy equipment. See my other video showing how to move equipment with a reach forkliftt. In this video, we use a towtruck to load a Mori Seiki SL-1 lathe onto a trailer. The advantage to this method - it's very cheap! Local towtrucks can be hired for about $100 because it takes less than an hour to do the loading. The disadvantage - towtrucks are not able to move a heavy machine into or out of your garage and can't reach very far. They are also have a limited lift height, so you can't load a tall flatbed truck this way. My other video shows the advantage of doing it the other way - with a reach forklift - that it can reach into your garage and grab or place your machine. I'll be posting another video soon that shows how I use my shop made machinery skates to get the equipment into and out of the garage.

I agree tow trucks are the way to go for loading/unloading. 200 more than covers the cost at pickup and final destination. well worth it. Cool video and great looking American Akita, i also have one!

Sometimes people risk too much to save some bucks
I cant imagine doing that with my machines . -
You call that a large machine ...... That thing is a baby.
-
that truck didnt even hardly squat ..
-
Looks like the Lathe fell off the trailer at the end there......Prolly better off because had you travelled with that load so offset like that you would have lost it eventually and possibly killed someone.
-
huge truck and the boom to short? I feel your pain lol

I liked the video too but I just wanted to criticize that your interference slowed down the operation, I'm giving you credit for coming up with strap pulls. Look how fast the tow truck fled the scene. I noticed the extra speed within the fast forwarding,

Good operator. I've done this kind of thing many of times.

That was on my to-do list for a while - make a gantry... but I had a tempermental forklift for a long time.. and I kept spending time trying to keep it running.,

Thanks! The dog is Scotch, and he's an Akita.

We thought about it. Would be easy to back over with an empty trailer. We weren't sure if the tires would like going back over the tow bar with the load on. 5500 lbs....
-
Why not just run the tow bar over?
-
now that was wild and The Dog was funny

cool vid

Not far enough from my feet while holding against the tow bar-why not push tow bar out against the load while moving to prevent swing?
-
Ive done this with my wrecker before with a large diesel motor, lift the wheel lift all the way up and then tilt up and it will clear the trailer and help push the load to the center of the trailer. If the wheel lift is high enough that is.

should of made a gantry crane to put the machine on the trailer. With all the stuff that you make it would be nothing for you to accomplish. 5,500 LB is nothing for a gantry crane and u can always use it for future heavy projects of your own. Nice skates by the way. U ever think about making a round pivoting plate for the top of that 1/2'' plate of your skates then you can install a hook on the 1/2'' plate for a bar to rotate the machine much easier. U should make some urethane wheels for them

Thanks, glad you liked it!
