The Eikenhof Food Empowerment Zone is situated south of Johannesburg, and was identified by the city council as farming land for a smallholder agricultural project. Selected cooperatives were each allocated one hectare plots, and they have been provided with infrastructure, equipment and machinery, along with intensive training, to give them a head start in their bid to develop sustainable small-scale farms. Some of the farmers grow crops and others produce livestock. The 270 hectare farm is dotted with thriving vegetable patches, growing tunnels and livestock pens. Some of the produce from this farm is already being sold at the Jo’burg Fresh Produce Market and various supermarkets. A R6 million pack house facility, when completed, will enable the farmers to professionally grade and package their produce before supplying their various markets.
