Three of my synchronizers were worn silky smooth. So I took the synchronizer rings out on the two good ones and just put spacers in there. I have to double clutch everywhere I go. Parts are no longer made for the New Venture NV3550 5 speed transmission. There are a few Chinese after market parts makers but why bother. They will only last until the next oil change. So I have been double clutching away. I am thinking to put a Toyota transmission into my junk er.

oh this is beautiful, I just understood where the force feedback comes from. It's the angle of the ring teeth, the harder you press the more torque the ring applies to the gear, and the more force you get back... up until the point where their speeds match and no more torque is resulting from acceleration, and so they mate.

98 ford contour svt grinding into 3rd except when I double clutch or let rpms drop think it's my synchro or a cable that needs to be adjusted

Brilliant vid, helped me make an informed decision on what to do with my car

Thanks for the video, I have couple problems with my car trans can you help me please
1. I have grinding sound when shifting from 1st to 2nd, and from 2nd to 3rd. but if I shift very slow it wont make the sound.will changing the syncros will solve this issue?
2. I have wining in 1st, 4th and 5th. especially when accelerating or releasing the throttle pedal but the gear is engaged. but the sound doesn't appear if the car is running (moving at any speed) but the gear is in natural.
what do I need to change? only trans set for 1,4 and 5? or the bearings also?
and do I need to change the trans on both shifts?
The car is Toyota Corolla 1999 manual gear 5 speed @ 120k KMs, I have changed the trans oil and put what is recommended in the owner manual the Castrol GL5 75w90 but it didn't make any difference.
Thank you in advance. -
What are the benefits on the later synchro units Muncie other then the stronger rings

I have some kind of blockout problem with 2nd gear, when cold or when downshifting from 3d to 2nd - gear stick goes through half of gear and then stops like its hitting wall. I guess sleeve goes through syncro and syncro stops the gear, but problem is when meshing action is about to happen between gear teeths? Please answer GearBoxVideo man :)
P.S. problem is intermittent, but happens mostly when engine is cold and problem is worser when outside is cold. But when warm it still happens, maybe if i move gear stick a bit faster then there is no blockout. No grinds or strange sounds. -
Hi Tony, Sal here,,, excellent and super informative video! Very good delivery too! Glad I stopped to look here!!! I'm dealing with a 2003 Ford Ranger 5 speed stick, with a 2.3L motor, and shifting gear to gear is getting more difficult it seems. I assume it's a synchro issue,, but,, sometimes when I shift from a dead stop, from neutral into 1st gear, I can feel something sliding just as I shift. It actually can be felt in the whole truck! It's as if the driveshaft, or something, is sliding forward & backwards making a slight klunck sound as I shift into 1st, or into reverse when I first hop into my truck and go anywhere initially. It doesn't do it after that first starting up and taking off. I would love it if you could just give me an answer if and when you can!!! But thanks very much for giving me the explanation I've been looking for for quite some time now! Ciao Tony!!!!

Hi, is the load on the gear teeth or is the load on the syncro cone teeth on the gear when it's engaged ?
-
befroe I bought your book , I went and bought a synchro slider and hub and rings , only to discover its a late one . Can I use the whole assembly in an early box ?
-
yes!!!! I am a shade tree mechanic and will be rebuilding my T150 3 speed soon. My guess is the synchro is out for my 2/3rd gear, but it may be a block out (I can slide it into the 2nd and 3rd gear, but it makes no noise.) great video

Why do some of the cogwheels have straight teeth and others have slanted teeth?
-
Dang! So now i know why the Saginaw 4 spd in my 1/2 ton grinds going into 4th. It didn't grind before i put a kit in it, it was jst noisy. I ether put the new syncro in wrong or its oversized, def gonna know what to look for. Thanks a trillion Tony!

Awesome video mate

Great video! I have a Getrag 420 6-spd gearbox (M5) that is displaying something like your blockout condition. It is drivable, but I have to put an unnatural amount of force on the stick to engage a gear. And when it falls in gear i can feel "scraping" through the gear stick. I have verified that the clutch disengages properly. Any thoughts? Thank you

Paul why can't you gear a Muncie 4 speed like a 3 speed where 3rd gear is at 1 to 1, then gear 4 th like the 5th gear in a 5 speed, then it would be like a 3 speed but with 4th gear overdrive? just a thought.

Hi . I have a small machining business and have been given a synchro ring that isnt available new any more. I can make new ones but I was thinking would it work to remachine the grooves in the internal taper and take a small amount off the face closest to the gear? Thanks for the great videos.

I accidentally grinded gears of my KTM DUKE 200 motorbike while downshifting from 6 th gear. It happened first time with my motorbike. Does it cause any damage to gearbox (It happened first time)

Been watching Jay Leno's Garage, and finally felt it's time to dig in. There's a ton to know, especially if you start with steam cars...so thanks for being around. One wonders about how machining became such a fine art so long ago....you'd think my damn 2000 XJ8 would of had a tranny that could last more than 4 years at a stretch in the hills of San Francisco. All those little channels.... after the second transmission failed in two years, I simply walked. Miss that comfy ride and the beautifully realized dashboard...and fake wood. (It did seem to smooth out at 140, though)

Paul, are NV3500 five speed transmissions junk?
can you go through one and make it work properly and last if maintained correctly? just asking.
