585 Lecture Series AERO Department http://www.engin.umich.edu/aero There are now more registered drone operators than licensed pilots. The founder and CEO of Aurora Flight Sciences, Dr. John Langford, will discuss the implications of this tectonic shift in the aviation landscape. The talk will address how we got to this point, and what some implications for the future may be. Aurora is in the process of joining the University of Michigan as part of the CUAS Consortium, so possible areas of joint research will also be discussed. Finally, Dr. Langford will discuss job opportunities in the UAS enterprise and at Aurora. Dr. John S. Langford is the Chairman and CEO of Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation, which he founded in 1989. Langford received his Bachelors degree in Aeronautics, Masters in Aeronautics & Astronautics, Masters in Defense Policy and Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Public Policy from MIT. While at MIT, Langford organized and led a series of human-powered aircraft projects, culminating in the Daedalus Project beating the world distance and endurance records for human-powered flight. Langford worked at Lockheed Corporation as an engineer on the development of the F-117 stealth fighter and served as an intern at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Following his MIT graduate work, he then joined the Institute for Defense Analyses before founding his first company in 1989. Langford also co-founded Athena Technologies in 1998, serving as CEO and Chairman prior to selling the business to Rockwell Collins in 2008. Langford has been the recipient of numerous aviation awards including the NAA Cliff Henderson Trophy, the DeFlorez Prize from MIT, the Barry M. Goldwater Educator Award from the AIAA, Virginia’s Outstanding Industrialist award and the President’s Award for Exceptional Service. He recently accepted the prestigious Aviation Week 2016 Laureate Top Innovation Achievement Award for Aurora’s record setting UAS Orion.
