Firing an original Type 99 Light Machine Gun at the Weapon Collectors shoot near Red Wing MN 4/16/09. Education about the gun: This gun is 100% original and still chambered in 7.7x58 Japanese (same cartridge as the Arisaka rifle). Contrary to some statements by the experts the cartridges do not need to be oiled. Nagoya arsenal, manufactured November 1943. This manufacture date incorporates all of the features of the early type 99: monopod on butt, telescope base, adjustable drum rear site, front site hood, and locking block safety bar. These features would later be deleted as the war progressed. I did install a 1944 Hitachi barrel because I did not want to ware the original matching barrel. The cooling fin machining on the late war barrel is cruder, the Nogoya barrel has rounded off fins. Some of the segments show the 2.5 power telescopic site installed. With short bursts the weapon is amazingly accurate. Some popular video games portray the type 99 as a shoulder fired weapon. This is not the case in reality. There is no comfortable place to place your support hand without getting a burn. One can place the support hand on the carry handle, but on the shoulder aiming is awkward. At 25 pounds the gun is difficult to hold on target from the shoulder. Enjoy the videos, I apologize for the poor quality. Nate in MN
