Machines | Introduction to Trucking - Air Brake Chambers
videos | at work | information | view | construction
Answering a fan's question with a video is better than answering it in 500 characters or less. *LOL* This video describes the newer Maxi-Chamber design, which you'll find on almost every air-brake vehicle today. The older design, a "Roto-Chamber" design, may still be found on antiques. For a view of the Roto-Chamber components refer to the image below; http://www.tpub.com/content/constructiongrader/TM-5-3805-263-14-P-3/0668960279im.jpg

At 9m20s, you talk about the powerful spring in the spring brake chamber. You mention it takes 60 psi to compress it. That "60psi" number do not tell a novice anything about how powerful this spring is. Mention instead that that spring pushes with a force of "2000lbs" , and can basically easy lift your personal car, or at least in the front or the back of it.
This spring is also preloaded inside the chamber, so when it is compressed it will expand to 4+ times its compressed length in 1/1000 of a second. This spring is a "bomb" if you let it out without control, or not knowing exactly what you are doing.... -

You shouldn't confuse "air" and "no air" with "more pressure" and "less pressure". Saying "there's no air in the chambers" when the spring brake is doing its thing in a parking situation, you meant there's "normal pressure" in it. The amount of air in any container does not tell anything about what's happening, but only what the situation is. However, I learnt all from this video anyways, thanks a lot for your time of making it.
