Several Griffith High School players, some still visibly shaken, received hug after hug as they walked among the crowd. A mother held her young son close as the Rev. Theodore Mens, of St. Mary Catholic Church, prayed, "As we look at the mangled bus, we know that you protected our children, our coaches and our staff in a special way." He continued the prayer, saying, "That all may know that God has a purpose for them in life. That God, who wished them to live, will expect them to do good and wonderful things in their life. That they will go forward honoring God and serving others in a special way, knowing that they are special as God has delivered them in such a wonderful way.” The Panthers were on their way to a semistate tournament in Lafayette about 12:30 p.m. Saturday when their bus was sideswiped by a woman who lost control of her car after spilling a drink on herself, officials said. The bus went off I-65 and rolled over, about a half mile north of the DeMotte/Roselawn exit. The 27 people aboard the bus, the woman and her passenger were taken to four different hospitals for treatment.
