This is how to replace a leaf spring hanger with out a oxy acetylene torch. I do use a propane torch to heat up the leaf spring bolt however. You assume all risk related to this video. How to remove rivets is at 5:36

Helpful tip, Do Not put heat to the bolt, use heat on the nut only!
-
you gotta grind the rivets almost all the way to frame
-
that's a valiant effort. I think your rivets mushroomed when you started hitting them out. hurts to watch. Not an easy in and put job by any means.
-
you say without a torch so how did you heat up the bolt without one? even a cheap $30 one is still a torch.
-
interesting video I always just grind the top off of the rivits and knock the hanger off and that leaves the rivits sticking out enough to hammer them out to each his own thanks for the video

Thanks for the vid. This looks like a pain,as bad as i thought.3 of my 4 perches are toast.Shit, this is my xmas vacation project. As for the rust.My 96 looks this bad,so does my friends 95 (he just replaced one shackle). The undercarriage of these ford pickups all look like they sat in a pasture somewhere.Must be fords factory undercoating,or lack of.Just did the front brakes. The line junctures at the frame were basically lumps of rust.Good god.Anyway,i got the tools, and a warm garage.Wish me luck

Just cut the heads off with a torch or angle grinder and use a drift punch or air hammer to push them out.
-
nice video. thanks for the effort.

Everybody chisels out the rivets. Why? It's way quicker and easier to drill them with some cutting oil.
-
Hi, good video , thats my truck. I saw you said you drilled the rivets. Are the rivets soft material?, if so I can drill them out. Thanks
-
Thanks for writing back I got the nut off but the bolt won't slide out nor even spin in a circle. Would a cut off tool be strong enough to work
-
You say in your video without a torch. To me that means no heat. Right at the beginning you talk about heating up both the head if the bolt and the nut. So how is that not using a torch? I highly doubt you used a lighter. All other methods would be torches.

Why not just put a saw zaw blade between the leaf spring shackle mount and the leaf spring bushing and cut the leaf spring bolt out in stead of spending 30 minutes with an impact wrench getting a rusty bolt out? Also, why not just grind the rivers flush with an angle grinder and punch the rivet out with a good punch? You could have the leaf spring and shackle out in a matter of minutes instead of hours? Time IS money.

Nice trick using the magnetic pickup tool to fish the bolt through. Thanks for sharing.

A grinder with a cut off wheel would have done that job pretty quick.
-
Just use a 3.5 electric cut off, it'll grind them rivits down flush in a couple mins.
Punch them through with a steel punch... hanger is out in 10 mins
Spray down the leaf nut & & break it free w/ a 1/2 " breaker bar ...
Job is complete in 15min... -
Great video, need to do this on our truck asap, helps a lot seeing the method and tools.
why didn't you put the bolt through from the outside in...would make it easier to get the bolt in because the tank wouldn't be in the way of getting the nut on the bolt -
As far as grinding an X into the rivet and then chiseling, why not grind the rivet head off completely and then just punch it out? If you grind into the surface of the hanger your replacing it anyway, right?

did you add the overload spring? I have a 96 f250 regular cab and it has no overloads. 8,600 gvw

In north east Ohio there is salt on the roads during winter which is effectively 5-7 months. Also, the summers are usually humid, plus we usually get a decent amount of rain during off winter months. This year I am coating the underbody with rust preventative before winter.
