Machines | HOW IT WORKS: The M60 Machine-Gun (720p)
videos | at work | information | view | construction
This educational video shows how the United States designed M60 works, how its operated and used. The M60 was first placed into service in 1957, and has served with all branches of the US though it has been replaced by the M240. In Vietnam is where it proved itself to be effective and reliable. Its a gas operated design, fired from the open bolt position and does have a removable barrel. Firing the NATO 7.62mm, it uses many different types of ammunition, belt fed: ball, tracer, armor-piercing rounds, and HE tipped. The M60 owes its roots to the German FG-42 and the MG42 type machine-guns developed in the early 1940's, which were in turn based on the MG43 technology as well. It was a superb design modified from the original German to fit American industry, ammo requirements, and the effectiveness. Germany still uses a the MG3 which is essentially a slightly updated MG42, having plastic parts instead of wood, and the mechanics modernized, but the design is nearly identical to the original. i carried an M60 as a young lance corporal and loved that heavy gun! my platoon sgt. taught us how to use it for indirect fire, a forgotten art. in the hands of someone who cares for it the gun is awesome.

Organic bipod?! Wouldn't you think that would have been a pre release edit in the original. LOL

I liked carrying the M60 during field training in the USMC firing blanks. Never got to clean one the Armorer always took care of that.

the M60 is based of the German MG 42 and FG 42 from ww2...the americans stole both designs lmao

It was (and still is) a dependable, light weight machine gun. I was a Huey door gunner in Vietnam. Only two problems ever happened. 1) It would "run away" sometimes and I would have to open the feed cover to stop it, and, 2) The buffer would go bad (fire about 1/4th the rate) and would have to be replaced. Because it was air-cooled and we would fly easily at 50 knots, I could fire a minute straight without blowing a barrel- probably longer if I wanted to chance it.

Huh. Not at all the way we were taught in the field in VietNam. Glad I never had to use it the way we were shown.
