Machines | How It's Made : Monstrously POWERFUL Gatling Gun, the World's Fastest Guns Documentray
videos | at work | information | view | construction
Gatling filed in 1862 a patent for a weapon more rotating barrels. She initially used paper cartridges that limit its reliability. The tests impressive nonetheless the US Army buys several models in 1865. In 1866, it is modified to fire ammunition with brass case. The operating principle is based on several sets, each consisting of a gun incorporating a bedroom and a percussion mechanism. Upon firing, one of the necessary operations (loading, locking, then percussion extraction and ejection of the case or sleeve) is thus at any time in progress on one of them.

The Gatling Gun was and is shit, it never worked half the time because of heat and too many moving parts, simple as that.

Why does the cover photo show a seven barrel Chinese Type 730 CIWS 30MM Gatling. Why not show the Type 1130 CIWS 30MM with ELEVEN barrels. Rate of fire, 10,000 rpm.

I do not understand why the three-barrel, 20mm Gatling was developed. Since 1955 the single-barrel, Pontiac-built M39 autocannon had proved to be a very reliable, rapid firing (1500+ rounds per minute) gun in the F-100 and F-101 aircraft. It was gas-powered, requiring only a small current to fire the electrically-primed ammo, which was the same round used in the 20mm Gatlings. I maintained both weapons in my years as an armorer, and they were each very effective. But, the M39 was a much better choice for the mission, not to mention simpler and much less expensive, because no large power supply was required. Another problem with the Gatling--it cannot fire repeated short bursts because of the spin-down clearing cycle. Whenever the crews tried it, we had huge jams and damaged systems to repair.

All of this money and technology just to make holes in humans.

Il costo di un solo proiettile porebbe dar da mangiare a una famigla intera per un mese.

One more question. Are any Gatling guns mounted on military land vehicles?
-
Why not have larger ammo capacity?
