Machines | High Speed railroad track laying machine in central Illinois.
videos | at work | information | view | construction
This train/machine came through our central Illinois town installing the new high speed rail. The process starts with the trolleys loading the new ties onto and picking up the old ties from the machine. As the front on the machine travels on the old track it begins to remove the spikes holding the old track. Next a magnetic wheel picks up the spikes and loads them onto a conveyor belt. The old track is guided up and away from the ties. Next the old ties are picked up and placed on a conveyor belt. Then the old ballast is removed and leveled before the new concrete ties are placed and spaced. The new track which was deposited earlier is guided onto the new ties just ahead of the back wheels of the machine.

Wow! It's going to be like this in California for the HSR project too. :)
-
I like that flexible steel used in the legs of the machine! LOL!
-
Do these machines lay entirely new rails (that never existed before), or just replace them? I've only ever seen these do the latter.
-
Amazing how much difference there is between the old and new rail head.

I am starting a railroad museum in Southern Illinois and I have to lay down over 6 miles of track withing the next couple of months. I wonder if they will let me rent this! :)

Wow, that's neat.

This is a great video. ignore the bad comments!!

Very interesting especially since I've laid track by hand many long years ago.
-
what model toaster was this recorded with?
-
Got one for a H O train set ?

Just think how the first rail lines were built technology has came a long way. This is supposed to be the safest track in North America. If the track gets fouled by a person animal or vehicle it will auto matically issue a slow order toall trains within a 10 miles

You have to be fast on trackwork you can bet there are trains waiting for them to finish the job. Railroads usually only give MOW crews a few hours at a time.
-
That's cause track work like this is heavily disruptive to the heavily used passenger trains in Europe, so they have to do it as fast as possible. In murca, if an Amtrak line gets such down, no one notices.
-
I will bet that its a BIG problem if any ties or anything gets jammed in there.

This is 1 Impressive machine. I have 2 tell my wife I want 1 for Christmas.

wooden sleepers and highspeed do not mix

if this was Europe that line would have been finished in 3 months,....not 3-9yrs estimated by Amtrak.
