We continue on with the machining of the large gearbox shaft. This video will show all of the heavy turning, and finishing of the shaft in the American Pacemaker lathe. I use the ISCAR LNMX tool for most of the rough turning, but also include some turning with an ISCAR COMG 643 turning tool. Material is 4140 heat treated and stress relieved. nice video because you were very elaborate. I know nothing of lathe so I have a question, why such a long lead in for the bearing, .014 that sucker should flop on. 2nd Q: why do you use the roughing insert to also finish? the finish still looked great. last Q: if you had .0125 to take off wouldn't that be .0062 on the dial, you said .0125 so that's .025 , I was waiting for you to say you blew it.

would it help to use a vacuum to get the chips out of the tool post and ways ahead of the tool cut?

Instead of using the Aloris tool post, have you ever considered grinding your own cutting tools like I had to do?

I think this comment comes a little late to the game buuut, I can't help but wonder if the heat coming off those chips could toast you up a egg, maybe a grilled cheese, maybe even a foil bag dinner?!

My carbide saw blades and router bits dull fairly rapidly when used on hardwood, why do your cutters not dull rapidly as well?
