Federal investigators say a California commuter train was going 56 mph when it ran into a truck that had been abandoned on tracks. National Transportation Safety Board member Robert Sumwalt said Thursday that the train had been going 64 mph when the brakes were applied eight seconds before impact. Sumwalt said a 31-year-old student engineer was at the controls at the time of the crash about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles. He says the man was completing a year of on-the-job training under the supervision of an engineer with more than 40 years of experience. Sumwalt and other investigators did not give any assessment of the crew's actions. The Metrolink train hit the truck before dawn on Tuesday, leaving three cars derailed and injuring 30 people, four of them critically.
