Organic exports out of Uganda recorded a meagre $1 million in growth last year from $45 million the previous year; further underscoring the huge output gap the economy must close. With a record 20% of producers and processors of organic products having encountered operational funding with lenders in the past year, sector players are now rallying for financing models that suite their trade. Musa Muwanga, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Organic Agricultural Movement, says Uganda has also failed to meet $300m worth of orders from the western markets; due to limited output from just 190,000 certified farmers. As Uganda’s economy continues to adjust to the market realties of the day, exporters of organic products, now reveal how the country lost out on a trillion shillings of returns last year. A host of issues associated with financing of the organic value chain, such as expanding on the certified outgrowers and modern processing machinery and cashflow financing; have edged some exporter out of business. Now the National Organic Agricultural Movement argues that contrary to mere bailouts of struggling enterprises, focus must be put on refining the country’s export strategy to deliver. Once touted as a beacon of organic farming in the world, new players within the continent, Asia and latin America are now confirmed as more formidable organic producers and exporters.
