Machines | Exhaust Header - Explained

What are exhaust headers? How does an exhaust header increase horsepower? What's the difference between a 4-2-1 header vs 4-1 header? This video explains how exhaust headers are used as a portion of the exhaust to increase horsepower, by using long piping and larger diameter piping, as well as a larger diameter collector. Can i drive my scion frs with aftermarket headers with a stock exhaust?
-
I have a 92 VX Honda Civic Hatch
Any suggestions for what kind of headers I should get?? -
People have forgotten headers have to be run OPEN to produce any meaningful gain but none of the header manufacturers will ever admit that.

how does this add up with turbo charging? basically how does it affect the WRX;) is 421 better for quick spool or 41?
-
I'm going to install 4-1 headers on my integra. Some say it makes it sound close to a boxer engine like a subaru.. that nice rumble. Is this true?

I hate this guy's face

will i get any power or fuel economy improvement with a exhaust header with a stock exhaust?

This is kind of an odd idea, but if pulling the gas out of the exhaust faster increases horsepower, wouldnt placing a fan inside the exhaust somewhere to direct air outwards do the same thing? I mean headers do this by keeping exhaust hotter further down the line and different size pipes, but wouldn't a fan theoretically do the same thing? Assuming that fan was powered probably electronically.

Hi, I need some suggestions to make my car faster. 1.2 litre, inline 4 cylinder engine. It is a Nissan A12 petrol engine with 4 speed gear box. Pls suggest some mods which can add power to the vehicle. Will the cat back exhaust with exhaust manifold and cold air intake bring the change or i have to add turbo??

@Engineering Explained do you know of any side by side Dyno comparisons comparing equal vs unequal length headers?
-
long tubes for a 4 cylinder look goofy as heck.

i have a 1988 k5 blazer with a 350 tbi engine and made some headers for it but i ended up losing power over to stock manifolds the pipes are 1.5" and its a 4-2-1 headers for each side why could i be losing instead of increasing?

What about the tri-y headers?
-
I'm not happy with your explanation on exhaust header design, If you link the correct 4-2-1 design exhaust together in the collectors 1-2 & 3-4 you find top end the same as 4-1, and maintain strong midrange.
Look at motorbikes, years ahead.
Pipe diameters change the pressure in the tube, too large and you will loose to much pressure and thus loose torque, to small, good torque, lacks top end revs.
All about sound waves, break points, pressure, scavanging and efficiency, (not 'back pressure', thats a 2 stroke laymans term, and can be referred to as the 'positive returning wave' which is going to upset a 4 stroke fyi. -
my cat. converter is build in with exhaust header. is it a big disadvantages to mod anything with engine, turbo?
-
I'm getting Megan header with the downpipe my Accord front end sit dirt low I'm afraid of it getting damage when I'm driving my front lip at the bottom is all scratched up I'm getting header mainly for a more deeper louder aggressive sound since I already got a cat back exhaust on my car

In regards to headers, would you recommend wrapping them?

I have a 1997 Tacoma 2.4L. 205k miles on it. I am installing Thorley headers, a magnaflow cat and gibson cat back exhaust. Can you give me any idea at all how much extra hp this may add? I did already install the K&N CAI and this seemed to be the logical next step in boosting performance in my old truck. Thanks for any answers on this topic! Your videos are really great.

4-1 headers make better top because they allow for easier exhaust flow than 4-2-1. I get that. But why would 4-2-1 provide better torque at low RPM?

How 4-1 piping helps to increase power more than 4-2-1 piping?
