Johnson Controls is one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers. Mary Ann Wright leads its global engineering & product development where she is responsible for driving technology and energy storage solutions. She joins John McElroy as his guest on this week’s Autoline along with Jeff Bennett from the Wall Street Journal and David Welch from Bloomberg. Get more video everyday at http://autoline.tv

She said that manufacturers have to build a specific car platform for a EV it's not true Volkswagen is selling a E Golf that uses all the same body and suspension parts as any ICE engine car and the EV version has the same interior space as all other variants plus in the Golf you can buy a Gasoline ,Gasoline plug in hybrid, Diesel .CNG by doing this they can produce what customer demands and all in the same factory if later VW want to get the cars lighter well then all variants will improve at the same time the EV version will likely loose weight in the battery department or just stay the same but with much better range.

One of the reasons EVs are being discounted is reduced battery costs....I don't see ICE costs coming down any time soon...She talks about weight reduction...but, one chemical change in a battery may result in fewer batteries being needed and improved battery performance....which results in less vehicle weight...I think Johnson Controls needs to check their blind spot....

Tesla is bringing down the cost of battery s down 10% a year. a 70kwh battery car costs the same as a 60kwh battery car a year ago. you guys are looking short term and ignoring the potential.

From what been said, it's not improving the ICE in itself but unloading the ICE directly from other systems, power steering etc and powering these from the electrical systems. Therefore it's not true efficiency improvements of the ICE but improving the overall car systems.

The skies are being constantly sprayed with chemicals to shield us from the Sun and cool down the Earth and here they are talking about perpetuating carbon emissions. I mean come on.

Yes!
More electric cars, truvks, suvs, motorcycles, battery technology etc. -
I don't see how there is still a 30% efficiency improvement with internal combustion engines. Electric motors are already nearly 90% efficient, there's no way an ICE car can touch that. Most ICE's are more like 30% right now I believe.
If it was up to me, auto start-stop would be mandatory for all new cars. Think of all the red lights, drive thrus, etc where you would save on gas immediately and easily. -
Great show, wish it could have went on longer. talking about weight reduction, replacing a heavy lead/acid battery with a lithium ion pack would reduce a lot of weight. I know it costs more but if everyone did it, the cost would go way down.

I'm surprised that vehicles with stop-start technology don't have electrically-driven air conditioner compressors. It seems some mild gasoline-electric hybrids (such as the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid) have the same issue where if the engine is off, the air conditioning stops running and the cabin begins to get uncomfortably hot since the air conditioner compressor is still driven by the engine, which in a stop-start vehicle, isn't running at a standstill.
