how much a year?

@swaznat maybe look into the civilian sector. Pay is better, experience will still be gained and you will have more free time. I imagine that they have maritime schools in the U.K. like they do here in the U.S. There is a basic chain of command on civilian ships; however, ranking people show little superiority to their subordinates unless of course they need to. I worked on ships in the Louisiana oilfield but left to further my education. Overall pay was excellent and the experience was great.
